MST3K Rewatch Week 106: Mystery Science 3000 - The Movie

It felt like a good one to transition from the sets to the few singles I got...

Somewhere along the road, someone thought it would be a good idea to do a movie about the guys who mock movies.  Uhh...  Not the best idea, IMO.  They mock This Island Earth, and it's a good choice, but the final product leaves a lot to be desired.

The MST3K movie is 15-20 minutes shorter than the actual shows, which just feels weird to me.  I literally get more on the tv.  The host segments felt longer, but I'd have to really check into that to be sure.  But I love the production values.  Love it in widescreen.  But I hate how slow it is and how much time is spent on the SoL and how few quips there are.  They slowed down the quips so the audience could join in, and that's fine, but it just makes things feel slow to me.

"Increase the Flash Gordon noise and put more science stuff around!"

Now, what there IS, is *gold*.  The laughs are fewer, but IMO, they were almost all of a higher quality.  Maybe a bit too much reliance on Star Trek jokes, but that's understandable.

Overall, it feels like a subpar episode overall, but the stuff was good, so it works out in the end?

Because the jokes are such good quality, I lean more towards this being a pretty good episode, since it outweighs the complaints I have.  It just seems like a wrong idea to have tried to put this in theatres.  You get very little for your investment that you can't get from the show.
