Hmm, this is a weird episode for me. I zoned out a bit during the first third, so I might revisit my thoughts later. However, I'm lazy, so probably not. ;) I reserve the right to do so.
This episode features what I wish the show was more about, the Actives being used to solve problems, to make the world a better place, at least for someone. The mystery/helping aspect of the show has kinda faded the last few weeks, and I was glad to see it back, I just couldn't really get into the whole murder mystery. Probably because it seemed pretty basic. So, this is what I want the show to do more often, but I'm not a huge fan of this foray into that sort of thing. If the Actives are shown doing beneficial things, I think it mitigates some of the ick factor with the overall plot. Mileage surely varies on that opinion, I'm sure.
On the other hand, Topher and Sierra goofing around the Dollhouse was just a blast. It could've gone all creepy and wrong, and I'm sure some people were expecting it to go some of those places with what we've seen of Topher so far. I was partly expecting it myself. However, I'm glad it was just two 'friends' cavorting around the place. It was fun.
I love how the Dollhouse is trying to push all the right buttons with Paul. Over and over again, they've done what in any other circumstance would work on any other person, but Paul is unusually...persistent. It helps him now that he knows the Dollhouse is spying on him, trying to use him, but even before he learned the truth about Mellie, he was the proverbial dog with a bone. I like the subtlety (Not the right word, but my brain is blanking) in Tahmoh's acting with the situation. The emotion that creeps into his face, and his pushing it back to try and fool Mellie into thinking everything is ok and normal when he sees he's risking everything and may tip off the Dollhouse by his inaction...well done. Could have been even better by certain actors, but I think Tahmoh is a good fit for the character, and did a fine job tonight.
Overall, a good job by the cast, and the C plot with Topher and Sierra was a highlight, and the ongoing B plot of Paul's quest moved along nicely, but the main story was a bit of a yawner for me. Literally!
